The Heuchera is a genus of evergreen, herbaceous perennial plants in the family Saxifragaceae, all native to North America. They come in a multitude of different colours ranging from the darkest purple through shades of red to almost florescent yellows.
They are extremely easy to look after and will tolerate most soil types and most positions within the garden. That said they may prove problematic if placed in excessively wet ground or deep shade. In our experience the darker leaf variety’s seem to withstand full sun better than there lighter leaf counterparts.
They are very versatile and can be used in numerous different ways even in hanging baskets.
The Heucherella is a cross between the heuchera and the Tiarella this leads to a lot more vigourous cultivar with more unusual leaf shape and colour.
Note
If growing heucheras in a peat based compost in pots and containers, vine weevil can prove a problem.
If you discover signs of vine weevil damage, a small white grub, that eats the plants roots. It is important that you remove the infected plants and all the compost from the pots and dispose of it.
